RESEARCHERS HAVE MADE a new kind of diamond in a laboratory.

Lonsdaleite is a shiny, brownish-yellow stone, in which the carbon atoms are arranged in a hexagonal lattice. Diamond has a tetrahedral structure.

Lonsdaleite doesn’t exist in a natural state, on Earth, but it’s been detected in the remnants of a nickel-iron asteroid that slammed into the Arizona Desert 50,000 years ago, in the Canyon Diablo meteorite.
